What do you do for money while you wait for disability?

My friend and former co-worker was recently disabled and can no longer work due to injuries from a car accident. But when she applied for benefits, she was told that she had to be disabled for at least 12 months and then it would take another 3-5 months for the social security administration to process her paperwork. She was fired because she was absent so often (even thought she has medical documentation of her illness) and cannot collect unemployment. What is she supposed to do for money for the next 12 months (or more)?

That is what an emergency savings acct is for.  Second she can apply for disability at 6 months  Social Security may not pay until 12 months.

Did she not receive monies from the car insurance?  Injuries and loss of income are covered.  If all else fails contact Social Services, Once Social Security Disability starts she will have to pay Social Services back out of the lump sum.

you  should  call  your  local  Dept. of Social  Services  .get  an  appointment and  ask  for  assistance  for  now  till ....or if denied

It will probably take more than a year to get the disability I suggest her that if she can do any work either sitting down or processing documents or whatever type of work she can do to go out there and do it.  She will earn more money that way than with disability, she cannot even go to school on disability so she will only earn $1,300 which is nothing if they approve the max, she still will need some other kind of income to support herself.  Sorry, she will need to change her lifestyle, hope she doen't have any consumer debt.
