  1. change your lifestyle, or change your budget.  You have not planned ahead for unexpected expenses.  There always has to be a spot  for emergencies.

When we first got married we had envelopes.  One for rent, one for food, one for bills, one for entertainment.  Each Friday after cashing our paychecks we put a certain amount into each envelope.  The extra went into the bank. When we bought a house, the rent changed and became the mortgage.

We still do this now.  I take $200.00 cash out of my check for the odds and ends during the week.  (Dinner, snacks, gas, coffee).  The rest goes into the checking account for all of the other bills.

  2. First of all, the key to maintaining a budget is to track every single penny you spend.  Are you doing that?  It's important so you can see how you're going through money in little ways (impulse buys, coffee, snacks, etc.) that may not seem like much, until you add it all together.

Second, maybe your budget is unreasonable.  Look over what you've allotted to each category.  Maybe you can "move" some money around.  Take some money from "entertainment" and move it to "groceries."  Or take some from "dining out" and move it to another category.

If you're still struggling, is there a trusted friend or family member who could help you out?  By that I mean, help you go over your finances and your budget.  I think it'd be easier to advise you if I saw everything on paper.

Good luck to you.  Good for you for having a budget in the first place! : )

  3. prices fluctuate and everyone that want a quite for a job misses that things change with every change you make so does your spending. it sounds like its time to 1. compromise - maybe you want more than you can get for the money price out cheaper alternatives . 2. rein in excess waste materials are big chunk of the job if they are being wasted then you are losing money as well the time guys get set into a schedule and drag there *** at the end of a job to keep working snap the whip.

3 fire the contractor they don't have your best interest at hand

  4. Driving the Contractor crazy will not solve anything-its' entirely up to you and how you balance reality with desire. We live in a more or less fixed price world. If your doing it yourself it should be relatively easy-you know what you want and can put up with-avoid large expenses on small, relatively unnoticeable things. Either that or go to a used Architectural warehouse and buy second hand doors, hardware, etc. and spend some time refinishing. Done well this can make up for a lot. Its' all about money and time-your money or your time.
