What do you do if you accidentally break something in a store?

Take responsibility. they usually wont charge unless they think you did it deliberately and a lot of stores have goods right up to the edge of the shelf making knocking things off pretty easy.

I fess up.  I bring it to the cashier and admit that I broke it.  Usually they will say its ok and not make you pay.  Luckily I have never broken anything expensive!

The right thing to do is to be honest and pay the store for whatever it is that was broken. Unfortunately, people don't always do the right thing.

I usually take responsibility, unless I notice it was broken already then I just leave it as is.  

Never broke anything expensive and most stores just cross it off as a loss.  So I never have had to pay for anything I dropped.

I do not run away, but I do not take responsibility either. I am not paying for something I broke accidentally. I will pay for something I broke on purpose though. I am not running but I sure aint paying.

In this case though tell the owner/manager you will pay the stores cost...you will pay what they paid. There is no reason to think they will sell everything in the store so you dont need to pay the profit. You can just pay there cost.

i probably would as well.

i was in a shop once it was a really posh shoe shop, with glass shelves, i bent down to look at a pair of shoes and as i got up i knocked the shelf off the wall and it fell to the one below and smashed and in the end about 6 shelves were broken, glass was everywhere and i burst into tears, i thought they were going to be cross and make me pay, but they were really nice and brought me a cup of tea
