Question:

What do you do if you can't get a baby gate for the kitchen?

The entrance to the dining room is about 10 feet wide (do they have baby gates that big?), and the space between the kitchen and dining room is not set up for a baby gate. It's hard to explain, but there's a walk way between the fridge and some built-in shelving, and I'm pretty sure no baby gate could be put there. Maybe, but I doubt it.

I saw this: http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/kdc/kdc07080.html but it's pretty pricey. Is this the best option?

  1. I didn't read the other responses but what I did with my last child was to use an old play pen.  It is safe and the child cannot put their heads in between.

You can just put it there or what I did was to put hinges on one side and a lock for the other side.

It works like a gate.  Hope this does make sense as it doesn't cost that much at all if you have an old playpen lying around

  2. I have seen wide gates where you buy as many pieces as you need and they fit together.  The only down side is you have to s***w them into the wall.  I saw them in a baby catalog that we get sometimes.  It is from One Step Ahead and it is called The Configure Gate.

  3. We had 2 Configure Gates. They are excellent for odd shaped openings, large openings, uneven openings. They are pricey, but if you are intent on having a gate, they are worth it.  We sold ours on craigslist when we were done with them for half what we paid--we had them for about a year and a half. We used them for some stairs. They were indispensable.

I found that the kitchen was a pretty educational place for my daughter to play, actually. Of course, you have to move all the cleaners, and cook on the back of the stove, but who cares if babies play with boxes of food, cans, pans, storage containers? I put the stuff that was o.k. for her to play with on the shelves she could reach.

  4. ~ my daughter has one of these, and I personally think it is quite the bargin for what you get.........it is very mobile,,,she can bring it outside for and outdoor play yard if needed,,,,and yes, she has a large opening into the family/play room....so it keeps my toddler grandaughter safe and out of the kitchen,,,,I would say its a good investment....

  5. yes i do think so.

however, look at garage sales if they're popular in your area as they are in most...

    ALSO! check eBay.com and craigslist.com.

They've got great new and slightly used for cheap!

  6. That is pretty pricey, maybe you could put up some french doors, they aren't that expensive at the local hardware store and you could do it yourself.

  7. if you cannot put a gate then better work with the things inside the kitchen.. like the cabinets.put locks in it. the stove, put something in front(like fenced it, 2-5 inches high which you can take off, too)that if ever you are cooking or the burner still hot your kids wont get hurt. put dishwashing soap and everything that kids are not supposed to play in a higher cabinets.

or if your kid is still in a stroller then put something big enough to block most of the openings..like a small table, couple of blocks.something that your kid cant push while in a stroller.

or if she/he is walking already and you really want to have a gate then better get some tools and woods.. customize one.make one.its pretty easy actually.maybe this is much cheaper than buy a ready-made.

  8. It may be pricey, but a good deal for such a big thing. When my kids were younger I had that.

  9. create a cabinet specifically for the baby to store stuff.  it's lotsa fun for them to imitate parents in the kitchen.  keep all breakable and dangerous things in top cabinets.  gates are just a waste of money.
