What do you do if you don't have a place to sleep in a big city?

Maybe someone can tell from his / her experience. What if you don't have a booking and the promise of your friend just failed and you don't have a place to sleep. How about an expensive place like London and you don't have 100 pounds in your pocket...Has anyone gone through this? Imagine no friends, no affordable hostels. What happens then :x

There was an article one of the news sites just today about the number of people that are rough sleeping (homeless) in the UK that are staying in the airports overnight disguised as travelers. You might also try a waiting room in a train station. A better option would be to get out of the city and try to find an affordable hostel in a more affordable location.
