  1. Back up slowly.  Don't stare.  Remaining calm is the most important thing.  What you do depends on the species and what it is doing.  If it is charging and a brown bear, drop to the ground and cover the back of your neck with your hands and try to stay face down and play dead.  You might have the nerve to hold your ground and see if it is just a bluff.  If it is a black bear and stalking you, don't play dead and be prepared to fight it.  They sometimes eat people and playing dead is the worse thing to do.  You don't want to appear weak to a young male or a black bear and you don't want to appear threatening to an adult with cubs or really any brown bear.

  2. kick its ***

  3. You play dead and lie on the floor.

  4. smack it's nose

  5. Travel in groups of five or more and run the fastest.

  6. According to Gary Shelton, a Canadian expert on bear attacks, you need to assess the bear's behaviour - is it being predatory -aggressive or protective-defensive.  If its predatory, you need to simulate an "attack" back - make yourself look big, wave your arms, and don't look away.  If its protective, walk slowly away, talking calmly, and play dead if you have to. Most grizzly (brown) bear attacks are  protective and most black bear attacks are predatory.  All polar bear attacks are predatory, but fortunately they are rare becuase they live so far north.

For details get his book "Bear Encounter Survival Guide" - a very interesting read that could save your life!

  7. Lift your arms up high and scream.....make like you're bigger than the bear. If that doesn't work, roll into a ball and play dead. And, if that doesn't work, well..........
