  1. well, if its a rail class you listen to the ring Steward who will call out walk, trot/jog, canter/lope, extend any of the gaits and hand gallop. and then reverse and do the same.  You may also need to back up.

remember to sit up straight and tall, stretch your heels down, shoulders back and eyes up...

    and that's it!

    good luck!

  2. Well, to begin with, the rider is judged, not the horse.  I meant, the rider's seat and the ability to guide the horse through the pattern that is always provided for both English and Western.  When you make your entries, ask where the equitation patterns are posted and go there and study them and go through them in your mind.  Sometimes it's only a pattern, sometimes it also includes rail work...try to attend a upcoming show that has those classes prior to the one that you are showing in.

  3. English equitation is judged on your position, control of you mount, and style. Western is judged on nearly the same this but the horses are different and the riding style is also

  4. well some classes are called different at different types of shows. But when I show its English Equation and Western Horsemanship. They are both flat pattern classes where you are judged mainly on your ablity to perform different gaits and directions.  You have to have good equation in general meaning proper seat and control of you aka look pretty doing it with little effort. being able to perform full and half circles, back, pivot rear and front, lead changes, extend and collect gaits mainly but not all
