  1. Join a group or start one yourself. Then start investigating.Go in with an open mind and have fun.

  2. Research, research, research, do alot of research online, library bookstores, don't sign up for any online courses just do the fact finding on your own. The more knowledge you gain the better. Remember to always question the experiences you have and take detailed notes  and never take for granted that you have experienced a paranormal activity without first discounting all possible rational explanations.

  3. 1. Decide what aspect(s) of the paranormal you wish to

investigate. (Ghosts, UFOs, ESP, etc. etc.)

    2. Decide what you are good at (interviewing people,

         sound equipment, photography, etc.)

    3. Decide what approach you wish to take to investigating

(looking for evidence, helping people, recording stories,

          etc.)

    4. Find a local group to join and investigate with them.

         Links below.

    5. Keep an eye open for what they do well and what could

        be improved.

    6.  The Paranormal Investigator's Handbook by Valerie

Hope is a good starting read.

    7. Determine how seriously you want to conduct research

Do you only want to go out on weekends or would you

have a laboratory running experiments if you could?

    8. If more than weekends seek a degree in a traditional

science (all full members of the Parapsychological

Association (link below) hold doctoral degrees most in

a conventional science (medicine, physics, psychology)

    9. Don't expect to get paid or do this as a full time living.

  4. Go out and get yourself some real reading material as to start paranormal investigating. Try to find a legitimate group in your area. there are several web sites  that list these groups such as sites with links, yahoo groups, and meetups.com. Do not go out and spend a lot of money on equipment to start with. You may find that its not for you and have a lot of expensive equipment laying around. Try to steer clear of those groups who rely heavily on psychics and mediums. While I personally have nothing against them, their help in finding anything is suspect at best and cannot be verified in any way. Once you join up with a group, see if you can tag along on trips and go to their meetings. OJT is the best way to gain knowledge. If you like what you are doing, then by all means figure out what your best at and go from there. Every group has different people in charge of different things. So you wont know where your going to fall in at. Join a group that does more than just wander around graveyards, this usually indicates a new group with little or no networking and real experience in investigating. Finally keep an open mind, but do not take every noise, or every picture as being evidence of anything, remember 99% of everything your going to get as in EMFs, EVPs, and Photographic evidence will mean nothing, your looking for the 1%. Good luck and have fun.

  5. Since there is no accreditation or licensing required all you really have to do to become a paranormal investigator is to say you are a paranormal investigator.  You need nothing more than the desire to do it.

I would recommend you teach yourself some investigative methods and make sure you have at least a basic understanding of the scientific method.  Also, don't forget the most important tenets of an investigator:

1.) You aren't there to prove anything, you're there to observe and record facts.

2.) The conclusion of the investigation must rest entirely on the collected evidence (i.e. not anecdotes and testimonials).

  6. I am a Paranormal Investigator and have been so since 1999.  I had alto Paranormal happenings since I was 5.  I finally had enough it and I found a group to join in Detroit and found out they were only into Demonology.  That was such an unsafe group.  I stared my own Paranormal group after I looked around and found  one that was in it for all the right reasons.  I studied with them and went out with them on a regular basis and I learned and from then on I was then able to go ahead with my own group.

I now know what to look for in a person if they are for real or not.

The no-ts do not join.  First if I were you I would check out several groups and ask if they take newbies out with them.  And, if they do just watch them slowly, take notes, ask questions, that sort of thing and then you would be ready to start your own group.  You never go into this type of work with blinders on, it can be dangerous and I am speaking from personal experience.  So, we have had our group now in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2000.  I was blessed with the ones God put into my life to be part of our group.  If you seriously want to do this kind of work, don't go into like you know it all as their are consequence you may pay for.
