There is a heat wave coming around my house, but I don't have a pool or air conditioning. What is a good way to cool down but by still conserving electricity and water?

People in city's around us are having rolling black outs and I don't want to contribute to that.

Thanks.

  1. All the suggestions above me are great, well except for one.  Try wearing light, loose-fitting cotton or linen clothes.  That always helps me.  Also, when you shower or bathe, use tepid water.  That will start you out cool.

  2. Strip down to my undies and write letters to my congressman and senators suggesting we build new nuclear power plants and coal power plants to eliminate black outs. They need to hear from people other than the loud mouth environmental wackos.

  3. Well, sprinle water on ure terrace, reapet this when its hot....itll keep a cool temperature around ure house!

  4. Get a couple of ice packs.  Keep a few in the freezer and one on the back of your neck.

  5. A fan uses less  power than an AC unit and help you to keep cool.  So will closing the shades

Most of the heat is going to get in through the windows.  If you can insulate the windows that would help a great deal.  White styrofoam would be the best material; don't use tinfoil.  White reflects heat better than shiney and tin will act like a radiator and do no good at all.  All those styrofoam food trays that people throw out after a single use could have been recycled to make great insulation.

  6. pull the shades, (close curtains, blinds, and other window coverings) this can help you for what tools you have listed. box and table fans to circulate air, or ceiling fans moving air will help feel cooler.

I wish you luck in your endeavor to stay cool.
