  1. I volunteer at Soup kitchens and Habitat for Humanity right now.

There are billions of places to volunteer.  Go to google.com and type in "volunteer in (your city and state)".  Museums, crisis centers, churches, political offices, shelters, it's pretty endless.

Or you can take a trip to an area which has just been devistated in some way and volunteer in whatever way is needed.

  2. Great question - the world needs more people like you!

There are tons of ways to make a difference.  I've sponsored a child through World Vision for many years.  I love getting the updates on my child, writing letters back and forth, and getting a new photo of her every year.  I've see a lot of their projects "on the ground" in the Middle East and Africa and am very impressed.  Their website is http://www.worldvision.org/ in the States, http://www.worldvision.ca in Canada, and http://www.wvi.org for links to other countries.

If you're still in school, you could start a 'Youth in Action' group through Free the Children.  Go to http://www.freethechildren.com/getinvolv...   They've also partnered with Oprah and on her site the groups are called 'O Ambassadors' - http://www.oambassadors.org

Free the Children also have books, including 'The Making of an Activist' and their latest is 'Me to We' - excellent books!  Info on these books is on their website.  They also have a related site at http://www.metowe.org/

Another site that I think you'll really like is Do Something at http://www.dosomething.org/. They have loads of causes listed and action that can be taken.

Here are some other ideas on how to make a difference:

    http://www.care2.com

    http://www.sixdegrees.org/

    http://www.networkforgood.org/

    http://www.betterworld.net/

    http://www.netaid.org/

    http://www.change.org/

    http://www.takingitglobal.org/

To make poverty history, go to http://www.one.org if you're in the USA, http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca if you're in Canada, http://www.makepovertyhistory.org if you're in the UK.

If you want to volunteer but can't afford to go overseas right now, how about volunteering online?  Check out

    http://www.onlinevolunteering.org/

If you can go overseas, then here are websites with databases of hundreds of organizations:

    http://www.goabroad.com

    http://www.transitionsabroad.com

    http://www.idealist.org

If you want to volunteer locally, then here are some sites if you live in the United States:

    http://www.volunteermatch.org/

    http://www.servenet.org/

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org

    http://www.pointsoflight.org/

    If you live in Canada:

    http://volunteer.ca/

    http://www.charityvillage.com/applicant/...

    All countries:

    http://www.idealist.org/if/as/vol

Every day you can go to http://www.thehungersite.com and click the button. The sponsors on the page then donate cups of food for hungry people world-wide. In a 12-month period they donated over 43 million cups and it only takes a second for each person to do and costs nothing!

Then on that site you can go to related sites (breast cancer, child health, literacy, rainforest, and animal rescue) where you can click and sponsors donate acres of rainforest, mammograms, etc. By shopping at the sponsors' sites, even more will be donated to the causes.

At http://www.freerice.com you can play a game of identifying meanings of words. For each correct response, the sponsors of the ads contributes 20 grains of rice.  (It's a fun and addicting site!)

Another way to give to charity without spending any money or volunteering is to use certain search engines. Whenever you do a search, the advertisers pay to a charity - usually you choose which one before searching.

Here's a site that lists a few of these search engines:

    http://www.easydonations.net/searchengin...

And one that lists 15 of these search engines:

    http://www.doshdosh.com/13-charity-searc...

Find a cause you're passionate about and take action on it.  Flip through a newspaper and see what catches your eye - is it an article on poverty?  illiteracy?  AIDS?  homelessness?  Is it a certain country or region?

Have fun and all the best as you go make a positive difference in this world of ours!

  3. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Go to your local church and ask what programs they have. Meals on wheels is a good charity. You could volunteer for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

  4. Depends...

Do you want to help a child locally, US based or globally? Do you want to give money or develop a 1:1 relationship? Neither answer is wrong, it just depends on your lifestyle and personality.

Locally, just contact 501C3s (IRS designations for non-profits or faith based orgs) that speak to you (ex. children/youth, elderly, infirm, literacy, green projects, church, etc.).

Sorry, I'm not versed in state/regional or global causes.

Bottom line, figure out what you want to help with, check the finaicials, and go forth!

  5. www.thepencilproject.com

It's very easy to get involved and you will be making a HUGE difference in the world!!!
