Hey Jim:

"Trying to be funny" is usually NOT funny.  Making a witty comment that fits the situation, usually is.  If it makes fun of someone or something (maliciously), it's NOT funny.

People who are truly funny, make people THINK, and thus make them laugh -- at themselves. Watch a George Carlin presentation. While he's very serious, he makes you think about what is being said, and then makes you laugh when you realize his observation was truly on target. Laughing at the humanity in all of us, is our greatest gift. It keeps us sane.

Its difficult to TRY to be funny and succeed. It needs to come naturally.

Really Bad Puns with a straight face. Hidden wit that is not immediately obvious. It is funny when people wake up in the night and realize it was a joke.
