What do you do when a whale has beached?

First is to call the people responsible to dealing with stranded whales. Most places have an organization or group that does this.

Then you do crowd control. Keep people away from the animal and try to keep the animal moist and cool. Keep dogs and birds away.

If the animal is smaller it may be easier to get it back in the water. It can take a few individuals or many people to help.

When a whale strands its self something is usually wrong. The animal  may be ill or confused or injured.

Sometimes the animal will be towed, carried or pushed back into the water. Where it will swim away and be safe or it will die  at sea.

Sometimes the whale will beach its self a second or more afterwards for unknown reasons or because it's confused or ill.

And sometimes sadly the only thing you can do is let the animal pass away peacefully or put the animal down.

The best thing to do if you find a beached whale is keep your distance. If you are the first one to see the animal notify authorities and wait for someone to come. But unless you are asked to help it's best to stay away. Getting too close will stress the animal out and hinder rescue efforts.

i was in thailand one time, and saw a beached whale, and they attempted to save it, but it was already dead by the time they did D:

What do you do when a whale has beached? - euthanize it.  It's most likely diseased or injured and will die anyway.

How many people does it typically take to get him back into the water? - too many.  Why is it that thousands of people will flock to give up their time and money to try to save one sick whale, but won't give 1/10 that effort into helping out fellow human beings?
