What do you do when you get OVERCHARGED for your meal, do you ask for a refund, or just accept it?

I was at a Burger Restaurant right beside University of Waterloo here in Ontario Canada. I have heard about how there has been a lot of scams over the past few months, especially one where people are selling $120 SPA treatments for a Spa that doesn't even exist !!

I understand that Universities are a magnet for scammers so I always have my guard up. I was hungry so I stopped in at the Burger joint for a quick bite.

I was alone in the restaurant so no rush. When I got my bill I quickly added up the charges and I discovered I was over charged almost $1.

The burger, fries, and pop when ordered alone cost $7.95

(burger: $4.45, fries: $2.25, pop: $1.25).

But I ordered the "Combo", which clearly stated on the wall that it was $7.08 (before tax).

The gentleman who took my order quickly left the room after I ordered it. The lady who came into the room quickly refuted my claim, saying "that is before tax, you have to add tax to it." and refused to give me any refund.

  1. I can't believe that happened to you, that kind of in-your-face scamming is audacious.

    I'm glad you did what you did, and I think everyone should boycott behaviour like this.


  2. I'm not as annoyed with the 98 cents as I am with their attitude towards the whole thing. Any professional would have just given you the 98 cents to keep your happy and coming back. Personally, I would have just walked away from it because I get angry easily and my blood pressure will boil over, causing me a headache and a bad mood and it just wouldn't have been worth it. And I know that they would just laugh at the whole incident as I walk out the door. But if you're able to stomach it, then I say definitely fight for it. If not for the 98 cents, then for good service that we as customers deserve. We go out to eat because we want a to be waited on in a stress free environment. And we should get it as we pay for it on our tab at the end of the meal. The lack of professionalism in the customer service industry these days in disheartening...

  3. for a buck i wouldn't complain i probly wouldn't notice. for a substantial s***w up heck yeah i'm getting that bill fixed.

    the new dunkin donuts they opened up near me doesn't substitue things like other stores do. so the other day when i tried to order a combo w/cocoa instead of coffee they tried to charge me more. i simply said no if you don't substitue i don't need it. thanks anyway

  5. I would have gave them the amount that the wall said and then walked out laughing at them out loud. Say you got your tip yesterday as well.

  6. First  the value for your time is much more costly then your turmoil of cheating experiences. You are also aware that you hv been cheated but control yourself that the extra money you hv thrown to a beggar knowingly well that he is not a beggar. Whenever this happens immediately put your problem your trusted God and He / She will take care and the actions will not be seen by you. At the same time losing your tensions resulting your pulse/ blood pressure increase and imbalance on your normal life which will spoil your health and this is very costly than the money spent by way of cheating.  The best way is  tell your friends that you have been cheated so that they will be more cautious and sometime your friend may smash them legally. ok forget what happened and enjoy your life

  7. NO JUST EXCEPT IT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT OR IF YOU TOLD HIM HE MIGHT HAVE MISS THOUGHT WHAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT

  8. It's not the point it's the principal. If that employee does that to 10 customers a day that's $10 that he is pocketing. Say for instance if he serves 20 customers a day and beats them out of a dollar, that's $20 a day, $100 a week (5 day work week), $400 a month. My solution to that is call the corporate office and complain.'Make some noise', I know there's someone else out there that this has happen to.

  9. You should call and ask for the manager, or if it's a larger chain, get on line or get their 800# and ask for a district manager or corporate offices.  EVERYONE has a boss.

    I carry a tiny calculator and do the math for them.  I am no math genius, but having worked retail in the past, you would not believe how many people asked me what 50% off of $20 was.  LOL

    The bottom like is- It doesn't matter if it's 2 cents or $20, it's YOUR money and as they say, it all adds up!  I hope you didn't leave a tip!

  10. I would have do exactly what you'd done. Only I would have played the part of an idiot and ask them to "spell" it out for me. I'd have them write down each one, add it up, calculate the tax and come up with the $8 so they could see for themselves. If they then refused to give you your change, I'd tell as many people as I could what they did to you and not eat there again. Word of mouth is the best (and worst) advertising.

  11. I would have asked for a manager.  If no manager was there, I would have called the owner of the business later and complained.  Be sure you get the employees name.  I don't think I would go back.  They don't deserve your business.
