Question:

What do you do when you have too short of wires protruding out of the box to work with?

How do you extend them when you don't have really enough hardly to twist onto another wire and to cap?

Can you have caps outside the box, like if you had to extend it before the box? Or what should you do?

Also, is there a new innovation to connect wires other than twisting and capping, which seems so barbaric?

Like somethng you stick the ends into and it just grabs and holds them together?

  1. Try to pull more wire into the box.  No you shouldn't cap them outside the box - against code and hazardous.  I believe the only thing that meets NEC requirements are wire nuts.  It might take a couple of tries but you will probably be able to get a pigtail correctly connected.

  2. just pig tail them and cap them.........you can do it.......I know you can.........use a girl's hands to do it.......if yours aren't strong enough:) Go for it..........good luck

  3. i m not going to really answer, just give input.there are many ways to join two wires by the nec.split bolt with rubber tape, tap connector, insulated in-line splicer.insulated butt connectors, uninsulated set s***w butt splice,b-taps,even direct burial splice kit.my point is,there are to many people doing repairs in places that that should not be done.I've seen to many taps and splices in walls , attics, with and without boxes, that future trouble shooting of circuits cost more than doing it right the first time.in my opinion ,residential is more dangerous than industrial because of shade tree electricians and the unknown

  4. according to NEC code you can also crimp the wires together. for this you will need a pair of crimpers that you can get in the automotive or electical department at any hardware store.  Look because many of them are sold in kits that will have both the crimpers and terminals together.

this link will show you how to do it properly

  5. Pig tail-with wire nuts short extensions or pull new wires-uhg. The only other thing would be to open the wall up and loosen the nearest staple and pull some more-another uhg. For low voltage applications there are some connectors that s***w together but I wouldn't trust them under a hot load.
