I started writing a book and at first everything was flowing, now it seems like I am going nowhere and it's driving me nuts! What do you guys do when this happens? I've even tried taking a break from the book and I can't.

  1. Don't you HATE that?! happens to me all the time. (sigh)

Well anyway, what I do, a lot of times before I even start a story, is think of some other scenes from the book and write those. Sometimes I still don't know all the details of how the story goes, but just writing some short scenes helps me get to know the characters and situations. I usually write scenes with main characters meeting each other for the first time or talking about what's happening or arguing or whatever. It's fun and it can help you get the feel of a story.

Also, sometimes I actually try writing the ending. You don't have to keep the first draft of the ending but it gives you something to work forward to, and reminds you where you're going with the story. Plus then you don't have to try to take a break from your book.

Another thing that helps is to go back to the point where you started getting writer's block and just try again. Really rethink where you want to be going with the story, and see if what you have is going to get you there. The story should always be moving forward, not just sitting in one place.

Well, good luck and keep it up! I hope this helps :)

  2. Listen to music! It helps...me at least.

  3. Just make yourself write about something. Write about your day or some person you saw walking down the street.  The very act of writing will often help you get your idea flowing for your story.

There is a book by a woman named Julia Cameron called The Artists Way that goes into great detail about writers block.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is having this problem.  She makes alot of incredibly helpful suggestions.

  4. Read

    And write short stories.

  5. I stop writing for a little, and if it still doesn't come i think of how i want the story to end and try going from there. You could also try writing a very brief story then going back after it is developed and filling in details to finish it off.

  6. take a walk

listen to music(the radio works the best)

read your writing over and over

read your favorite book a bit

    write poems

  7. Take a break! Sitting and staring at your blank paper/laptop screen isn't going to do anything except frustrate you. Do something fun or inspiring. Or if stress is the REASON you can't write, do something relaxing, take your mind off the source of the stress.

    Hope that helps.

  8. First, I would try to diagnose the problem. Could it be that a part of the story simply is not working and has left you with nowhere to go? Read over the story and be flexible, you may find the plot just needs a lil tweeking. Do whatever it is you associate relaxing with: taking a bath, having  a drink(or both at the same time) listening to music, taking a drive, doing some yoga stretching etc. Most times I will read some of my old poems, journal entries etc. and that leads to further insipation. Ultimately thats what you are looking for, something that inspires you to write. hope this helps. =)

  9. There's this really good website. I'm more than 100% sure it will help you. I really worked for me! It's just fantastic, and absolutely free!

So just sign up and then download the PDF file. Trust me, you'll love it. =]

  10. Try skipping ahead, and fill in the middle later (or skip back, and add more details).  Perhaps something that you write in another part of the story will give you an "A-ha!" moment where you'll know what you need to fill in your current blank.

  11. hey! if you go to this site click on calender then click on advice it gives a little advice for writers block that might help you. also, the site is brand new. you can post stories, poems, etc. on there. so use it and spread the word please! :)
