  1. Back up slowly. Don't stare. Remaining calm is the most important thing. What you do depends on the species and what it is doing. If it is charging and a brown bear, drop to the ground and cover the back of your neck with your hands and try to stay face down and play dead. You might have the nerve to hold your ground and see if it is just a bluff. If it is a black bear and stalking you, don't play dead and be prepared to fight it. They sometimes eat people and playing dead is the worse thing to do. You don't want to appear weak to a young male or a black bear and you don't want to appear threatening to an adult with cubs or really any brown bear.

  2. Keep running.

    But in a casual way.

Just out jogging yo, lah de dah, don't chase and eat me.

  3. Some people carry bear mace with them, if they are in bear territory. One guy I knew encountered a black bear, the bear got up on it's two legs, raised it's arms over its' head, growled, so as a reaction he did the same thing back to the bear, but raised his arms higher, the bear retreated. Most bears don't attack, unless they are very hungry or find you as a threat, but if it happens have some bear mace or try the reach for the sky growl method, it worked for him.

  4. dont move

  5. Well, in case you do not have a sawed off shot gun to protect yourself, I would start praying that an angel would protect me. I did read in National Geographic years ago of this happening in a National Park. An older man and his wife were eating lunch and camping and were almost killed by this bear. The man saved his life and his wife's life by sticking his binoculars in the bear's mouth and deep in his throat. As the wife was screaming for help some park troopers rescued them. I guess you could use a large camera or binoculeers to stick in the wild animals mouth and scream.

  6. Several options:

    1.  Travel with someone slower than you and/or push them down and run.

    2.  Stuff your buddy's pockets full of bacon so as to deter the bear away from you.

    3.  Just let it take your stringer of salmon.  Don't argue with it, you'll lose.  It sucks letting a bear eat your fish, I know.

    4.  Drink a redbull, it gives you wings.

  7. throw yourself to the floor and pretend your dead

  8. Well, that depends on the type of bear. Playing dead is actually not good for many species such as black bear, which is the most widespread bear in the world.
