What do you do when your eyes begin burning?

My niece is trying to go to sleep, but everytime her eyes close they start burning. Do you think it might be because she's been swimming a lot lately? If not, what is it? And more importantly, what can I do to fix it?

  1. Sometimes if there is a cat around your eyes will burn and itch.  I  just was my eyes with cold water if this is the case.  If she has been swimming she might have gotten Chlorine in her eyes.  Might be good to tell her mom to take her to the doc's then.

  2. When the eyes are very dry it can cause a burning sensation and chlorine from a pool can definitely dry out the eyes. Bedtime and in the morning are usually the worst for dry-eye sufferers also. Swimming goggles can help prevent this, as well as using an OTC eye rinse after swimming. To treat the dryness, use over the counter artificial tears, NOT traditional visine. Original formula Visine and Clear Eyes, etc, are meant to "get the red out," and they do this with an astringent ingredient, which shrinks the blood vessels, but can actually dry the eyes out more! Any type of artificial tear will help with dryness. My favorite is Systane.

Dryness and a burning sensation can also be a symptom of eye allergies, but if her eyes aren't also itching then she probably doesn't need Rx drops for eye allergies.

  3. Chemicals can make eyes burn (so if chorlinated pool - sure this could be burning her eyes) - and your eyes can be sunburned just as your skin can be (it sounds like she's been exposed to the sun a lot).   I would apply a cool washcloth and also give her a mild pain reliever - just as you would treat a sunburn (but without creams and such applied directly to the eye).  If the burning does not subside with some rest from the sun and pool water - then I would have her see a doctor - there can be more serious underlying causes.

  4. swimming a lot burns the iris and irritates it,the best thing to do is flush out her eyes with cold water and then put in eye drops. it should give her a sense of relief.

  9. if shes been swimming in a pool with chlorine in it that could cause her eyes to burn. it happened to me a lot when i swam.

gently rinse her eyes with water.

  10. She should definitely apply some normal eye drops before she sleeps. If the burning doesn't stop, then she should visit a optician.
