  1. This happens to me all the time.

    No, not really.  I have been in quicksand before, and it is scary.  Your first reaction is to kick like you are swimming, but that makes it worse.  Best to spread your weight as much as possible.  If you can reach one, grab a branch, stick, anything you can you distribute your weight across more area.

    Some quicksand is just very soft mud under semi-clear water.  In that case, lay down and swim, even if the water is only a foot deep.


  2. I've always been able to just walk out of it. However, the procedure is to lie flat to float your legs free. Then, breast stroke your way out. If you just happen to be carrying a stick, you can work it under your body to free any parts of you that are stuck. It's not something I lose any sleep over, even though I spent a bit of time in bogs, which sometimes act similarly.
