You go to grocery store, pay with debit, get recept. Then do you throw it away? save it? if you save it, why? if you dont save it, then why do you even bother to get a receipt?

Is saving receipts a big waste of time, paper and effort?

  1. i just get a receipt to make sure they didn't overcharge me.  Then, it goes to the bottomless pit of my purse, where it will eventually stay for a week or two until i throw it out.

  2. well where i live, theres lots of discounts and offers on the back of receipts (eg domino's offering cheap pizzas, 2 for 1 buffets) so i tend to keep them. but theres only so many times i want a pizza or want to go to a buffet, so i end up throwing them out as soon as i get them.

ive actually never needed to return anything so out of habit i just throw them away.

  3. I enter the amount on the receipt into Microsoft Money on my computer (a checkbook would do). Then I file it in my filing drawer. Then, when the statement comes in I check off each receipt on the statement to make sure that they charged my correctly. Then, I throw out all the receipts except for any of them that have something expensive on them, something I might return or something that has a warranty. I put those few back in a different file along with the statement, so all I save is the statement and usually I'll keep those for a year.(it's only 12 of them).

And believe me, I have found double charges, where a grocery store charged the same amount twice and I found (a few times) a waiter changed his tip amount after we left! OH did that pis$ me off! I know you didn't ask about checks but I also found checks that were cashed for a different amount than what I had written on them!

It's good to get your own system down so you can make sure you're not being overcharged and you can call, let them know and they can correct it.

    Hope this helps....

  4. I don't save my receipts, but I used to.  They're nice to have because every once in a while when you check your bank statement and it says you spent $45 somewhere and you can't remember for the life of you what you spent at that location, you can just check back on the receipt.  Or alternatively, if you check your receipts and you didn't spend money at that location, you know that someone has been using your debit card or that it's been stolen.

  5. I don't save receipts. Sometimes, for certain things, I wish I had, but oh well. =)

  6. I save them in case they make a mistake - and they do....

Then I either file away or chuck.

  7. i only save recent reciepts just incase i have to return something

after about a month i throw them away

and my mom keeps her reciepts if she paid witha  debit/credit card but after a while she shreds them

and yeah its a big waste of time

  8. I keep them until it clears off of my card so just in case anything during the transaction messes up I can go to the bank and say.. hey now! what's this madness?

  9. If the receipts are for groceries,I keep them for a few months and then dispose of them. For anything else I file them away.I keep just about everything.

  10. I keep them until I can verify that the payment has gone through.  I also keep them just in case the product is damaged.  If I am certain that I will keep something that I bought and there is nothing wrong with it and also that the payment will go through properly then I get rid of the receipt.  Usually I keep all receipts for atleast a month.  I burn all of the old receipts after going through them every month or so.
