What do you do with the tail after casting on your stitches (Knitting)?

What do you do with that dangly bit of string thats left over after you cast on your stitches. I dont know anyone else who knits, and I taught myself how out of a book, but it doesnt say anythign about what to do with that d**n piece of string thats left over.

  1. You thread it onto a tapestry needle (big fat needles with blunt point) and weave the end into the stitches you've already knitted. After you knit about an inch weave the end down and back up catching only the back of the stitches so it dosen't show through. You can go to knitty.com for pic's just type in weaving in the ends into the site search.


  2. You can also leave the end out  there until you're finished, either as a way to find the beginning row or to help count how many rows you've done.

    Often, depending on the project, the cast on tail is used to fasten together, such as making a sleeve or to join 2 knitted pieces together.
