Question:

What do you feed your kids?

I have a 14 month old boy, and I am always so worried that he is going to choke when he is eating. I also raise dogs and one of my puppies choked and I wasn't able to save her even though I know procedures to do so, and that was when my son was 3 months old. Ever since then I have been so worried about what goes in his mouth. My husband always tells me to chill out and just let him have stuff. Anything I give him is in tiny pieces. I even cut up the stuff that comes in toddler meals. What does everyone else give their children around this age, and what sizes? Thanks for the advice!

  1. My son eats what we eat, he just turned a year.  We cut the pieces up small, but not minuscule, he likes to chew his food.  He has never choked.

  2. Just stay away from big pieces of hot dogs and chips.  Anything like small hard candies are dangerous at that age too.

  3. Hi, I understand that you are worried, but it is important that babies that age are giver courser foods so they are able to learn how to chew.

Babies this age enjoy munching on whole banana's, sandwiches cut up into squares or triangles, watermelon, strawberries cut into 1/4's, cantelope cut into long sticks. Foods such as these  are great to allow your son to safely master chewing. Then you can move him onto harder foods.

Good luck, and don't be worried.

  4. Just cut up whatever you give him into 1 inch pieces. Macaroni, corn, chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...

It seems like you are doing just fine! Its normal to be concerned, just watch him when he eats.

  5. my daughter ate almost anything at that age. her favorites were cheese and pickles.

now shes almost 3 and eats chicken nuggets, pancakes, hotdogs and random things. shes not much of an eater.

she likes to hoard things in her mouth though.

she has never choked. do what you think is best. each child is different

  6. my baby is still younger than your baby, i do have the same problem, its true it chokes.. but there are few things

    - give him the piece of fruit or bread  be around him he ll choke but he ll learn to eat .

-when he eat little big piece give him smashed piece of that he ll eat.. sure it ll take time be with him.

-don't cut it into choking size give him big enough piece.

-all this home will help him to chew and eat and there ends the problem.

what i learnt is all the babies are not same some are slow and fuzzy eaters, they will manage them self.

    don't worry!!

  7. I think you should take a CPR class to learn the technique for saving a choking child.  my daughter choked on a tiny bite of PBJ sandwich when she was little. Luckily i had taken the class as part of teacher training. I Just flipped her onto stomach and hit back until food came out.Kids can choke on ANYTHING.You shouldnt worry all the time.

  8. I am soo sorry for the loss of your puppy. I can't imagine how traumatic that must have been for you. As scary at that was though you cant let something like that affect your life forever. If your son had teeth then he can eat the toddler food without it being cut up. My son is 14 months old and he eats exactly what we eat just diced up into cubes. He eats cooked carrots, peas, corn, green beans, hot dogs, hamburger, chicken, french fries, bananas, mandarin oranges, pancakes, apple slices, pickle spears, vanilla wafers, gold fish, animal crackers, I could go on and on. Although he does have all 4 front teeth on top and bottom and 1 molar on each side top and bottom. If you are worried talk to your ped. and see what they recommend, but as long as he can mash food with his gums and you don't give him anything bigger than your index finger nail he should be fine.

  9. I was always told by the health visitor not to cut up food too small and to let them take their own bites.  I.e they can hold a piece of bread or an apple/banana and take bitesized pieces themselves.

Just make sure you are always around whilst he is eating -

I'm sorry to hear about your dog but dogs are different from kids and some dogs will try and stuff as much food into their mouths as quickly as possible- my dog can eat a whole rabbit in about 3 minutes - not good
