  1. The problem I have with it, is that you are not changing the habits and psyche that made an individual overweight.   People have defeated both bypasses and bands by, for example eating M&M's, small, quickly pass through the stomach at a ton of calories.  Eating soft serve ice cream, drinking milk shakes.  All ways to defeat the procedure.

I'd recommend you read two books, implement them into your life and see if you don't need the surgery any more.

    Ultra-Metabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman

Body for Life by Bill Phillips.

Both will teach you how to eat and exercise.

  2. Horrible.

From my mom's experience, she did lose 160 pounds, but she is in pain all the time every second of her life.

It's horrible. She can't work, she can't do anything. It's ruined her life as well as her familys' life. Her kids are 14 and 16 [me and my brother],and we can't even do anything with her anymore. We used to go to disneyland every week,we were gone all the time..not anymore. Now we live on food stamps. We got whatever we wanted before, because she had a well paying job,now we can't afford anything. It's mostly her back/shoulder that's killing her.And doctors can't find out what's wrong.

She says she would rather be fat, does that answer your question?

Being skinny is no good when all you can do it lay in bed.

  3. It depends on how over weight you are and how negatively the weight is affecting your life. If you are able to live a normal life then the surgery is probably not worth the risk.  However, if you are experiencing health problems due to being obese then I would suggest asking your personal doctor for more information.  A good online gastric banding resource can be found here:

  4. The people I've known who have had it done have lost weight at first, but then gained it all back, plus more.  I think some doctors encourage it because they have a product to sell and money to make, not because it's really a good idea.  This is, of course, just my personal opinion.

Before you have the surgery, get this book and read it cover to cover: "Lean & Free 2000 Plus" by Dana Thornock.  You should be able to get it on amazon.com for under $5.  She also wrote a cookbook, which should also be linked through amazon.

This book could really change your life, and for $5, it's worth a read.
