What do you feel is a good tip?

I am thinking at least 20-25% at a minimum. For those that have been servers, do you feel that people tip fairly?

  1. I am a server........

    :( 10% Bad Service

    > 15% at Most Neighborhood places

    > 20% at Nicer places (1.5-2 hour waits on Saturday night or if the average dish is $15)

(It depends on what kind of restaurant.  Anywhere you go, the general rule is 15%.  If your service was absolutely terrible then leave at least 10%.  Servers only get 2 to 4 dollars an hour.  They live off of tips.  If you go to a nice place like Maggiano's or PF Changs, then leave at least 20% for good service.)

********For those who complain about giving tips, you would feel most welcome at Burger King(available nationwide).  You are able to fill your own diet coke, tilt the fry box to your mouth and shake the fry crumbs out, throw your own mayo soaked Quadruple Whopper wrapper away, AND NOT TIP!!!!;)!!!!  For those who enjoy a nice relaxing dinner with love ones and friends, please respect the server.  Have some class, if you don't feel like tipping right, go to Burger King.

    Dine Right Please!

  2. I like to double the tax. I went to a nice place and the waiter was very nice and our friends and us got split bills. we all got charged around 40-50 for the  dinner each. (each as in each couple) and they tipped 4-6 bucks. I tipped 10. :) I tip cause they diserve it. if the waiter sucks i tip less.

  3. It depends on what and how much you are spending...you dont want to over due it with the tip and you surely dont want to under do it either..so if your spending $25.00 you should leave a tip of 4 to 5 dollars. Like i said it depends on how much you are spending. And no some people do not tip fairly.

  4. 15-20%

  5. Hey, I never got tips for checking out people's groceries, or stocking shelves.

The employer should pay their employee's salary...so I don't see the need to leave a tip.

I'm not the one that opted to take a job making less than minimum wage.

  6. Only 10% is needed and if you are really good then 15-20%. I hate tiping, because your pay should come from your employer and service should always be good. You serve people, that is your choice and if you don't like what a person gives you get a job that you don't need tips to make ends meet.

  7. Both my mother and my mother in law worked as servers at some time in their careers. I tip very high. Usually, if my meal is around $10 or $11, I'll leave $5.00. I choose my restaurants carefully, and I expect reasonable service. I consider my tip part of their pay, like paying rent on my corner of their station.

  8. I personally think that tipping a percentage is c**p.

What if you got bad service?

I do not pay for service I didn't get.

Plus what if I can't afford to tip the percentage?

I always leave a tip though, but the amount depends on how good the service was.

If it was bad the waiter/waitress can expect between $1- $2.

If it was good it is generally going to be above $5.

Depending on what I can afford to give.

Yes, people who have had this kind of job are going to get mad at me, and probably bring up things like waiters have hard jobs blah blah blah.

And I agree that waiting tables is hard.

But I don't agree with using that as an excuse for bad service. I can forgive a few mistakes on the part of my server if they're personality is great, and they have given pretty good service.

On the other hand, if my server is being a jerk and/or gives me bad sevice, well they shouldn't expect to be tipped well.

Of course I do make exceptions depending on how busy the restaurant is, and whether or not my server is trying.

When I eat out, I want to feel like my server cares, and a truly talented server can make you feel that way despite how busy the restaurant is or how bad their day has been.

  9. I usually just double the sales tax and round up.  I would rather people come in to my place and eat and it stays popular to insure my job security than worry if someone shorted me a dollar in tips.

  10. I tip according to service. If the service is very bad then the tip is very small. If the service is good then the tip is around 10-15% of the total bill. Never will I tip over 15%.
