What do you gap the points at in my 84 mercruiser 350 chevy and can you use car parts or the expensiveboatpart

  1. Go to the marine store.  Points are ony about 15 bucks.  But I think they are gapped at .053 in.  But my memory's not the best, so check with the guy at the marine store, because not only can he sell you the part, but if he's a servicing dealer he can give you that information as well.


  2. I used a lot of car parts-spark plugs U-joints, solenoids. Carb kits (with a few exceptions-due to flame arrestor designs. You could use a starter if it was modified with flame arestors  in the Ozone vent and the solenoid was sealed. Caps and rotors without vents work. You cannot use: auto carbs, alternators or distributors. All these have fire retardant problems. Rule of thumb-if it makes a spark internally, or a flame(back firing carbs) you should stick with marine. Remember you are only saving a fraction of what the boat is worth, and if the fire investigator find an automotive alternator on you burned out boat, your claim might go out the window.
