  1. Nice people, wonderful food, beautiful scenery, easy language, corrupt government but nobody's perfect:

  2. The area Malaysia is in has some problem with militant groups and the government seems to be corrupt. But it looks like a nice area.

  3. DH travels there with some frequency. His opinions differ a bit from the previous respondent. The people he supervises there are ethnic Chinese. They are all polite and cheerful, even when they call our house at 2 a.m. [here]. ;-) On the other hand, he has seen several Osama bin Ladin portrait tees on people in KL, which makes him a bit uncomfortable. That being said, no one actually harassed him or anything, it was just creepy/weird. Also, he detested most of the local food. The offerings included entirely too much steamed & raw fish for his meat-and-potatoes appetite. Also, it is a Muslim country, so he could not get any pork product (breakfast bacon, ham, etc.). These 2 things combined to cause near starvation on his first trip. (He lost 15 lbs.) On later trips, he explored & found some good restaurants (German, French, etc.) & stayed at a hotel with American & European food on the room service menu. As a foreigner, it is best to just keep your head low & mouth shut about anything religious/political. (This from a family friend who lived in Malaysia for 8 yrs.) Other countries (including Malaysia) are much less tolerant of non-citizens' political activities than we (U.S.).
