Most ski areas offer some kind of Instructor Training Course early in the season.  Depending where you are, it might not be too late.  Then, from the people who take the clinic, the ski school director and supervisiors will offer positions to those who they think would make good instructors.

No, you don't have to be a perfect rider.  I think as long as you can link turns, you'd be ok.  Heck, we hired a girl once who couldn't even link turns, but she learned within the first week she was there.  All the other instructors helped her out and she became one of the best kid's instructors we had!  The thing that they won't like is if you have bad habbits and a bad attitude and are unwilling to change your style.  That's usually not a good thing.

More important that how good of a snowboarder you are is your communication skills.  How well you can convey your message and speak in front of a group???  When going for instructor certifications, you are tested on 3 different areas (at least this was the way it was when I did it!):  1.  riding ability, 2. teaching, and 3. technical knowledge.   You have to obtain certain standards in each of these areas to obtain certification.

If you are going to be an instructor, you really have to be there to share your love of the sport.  It's usually not a high paying job...  When I first started teaching, I did it for the free pass while I was in college, but the more I did it, the better I got at teaching, and the more I liked it.

If you want to teach, call the ski school director now and find out how they do their hiring!

Have patience to teach the learner of what they need to be learned. Know what they have to do so you dont do it verbally, but physically. Know how to ride backwards so you can maybe hold the learners hand to help control balance.

You could look into becoming a volunteer instructor - that's what I did. They taught me how to ride and demonstrate skills and how to teach the right way. You don't have to know how to ride that well if you are teaching beginners and you can progress as you teach higher classes.
