  5. With the primaries in Texas you'll have to register with the party in whose primary you will be voting.  This you may do at the polling station (actually you'll have your voter's id card stamped with the party in whose primary you voted).

  7. Hi Amy,

Texas has a unique system. In many states, a  voter needs to be registered for the party they wish to place their vote as to who they want to represent them as a candidate. Texas has a "closed primary" with a twist.

"Officially, Texas has closed primaries. But in practice, any registered voter may vote in the primary of any single party, as long as they have not voted in the primary of another party. Texas's primaries are closed in a less direct way: once a registered voter has in effect declared his or her party affiliation by voting for the nominees in a party's primary, that person cannot participate in the proceedings (for instance, a runoff primary or convention) of another party."

Of course, once the general election comes around, you can vote for whatever candidate you like regardless of political affiliation.

The information in quotes was copied from the following link provided by the University of Texas.
