What do you have your kids call your parents?

My mother refuses to be called Grandma. She said it makes her sound old. She just turned 50 a few weeks ago so she's having problems with me making her a grandmother the same year she hit that milestone. I'm due in November and this is my mom's first grandchild. I'm just not sure what else to have my baby call her... I figure I should start calling her whatever name we choose when the baby is born so she gets used to hearing it and knows what to call her grandmother... But I just don't know! What do you have your kids call your parents? My dad hasn't said anything either way, but I'd like ideas on what to call him too.

Thanks!

  1. I call my grandfathers "Grampa ______" and "Grampa _______"

My grandmothers are Grammy and Grandma.

    Here are some suggestions,

    Granny

    Grammy

    Nana

    Mom Mom

Or mother in a different language (your heritage)

  2. My girls call my Mom - Nana, my StepDad - Pappy, my Dad - Papaw, his girlfriend - Dee, my husbands Mom - Momo and my husbands Dad - Popo.

  3. yes whatever you do ... make sure you start calling your mum grandma or whatever gets chosen straight away because my bfs nephew calls his granny "mum" because thats what his dad and all his uncles call her and she's rather embarrassed and feels really bad about it.

i just made my mum a grandma for the first time (she is only 43) ... and we had to use the process of elimination because my mother in law is granny (well thats what she's supposed to be called), father in lad is grandad, 3 of my sons great grandparents are still around so that eliminated gran, nan, and pop, so i started calling my mum grandma although we have also started calling her g-ma ... a little bit more "hip" i guess ... its funny ... just have fun with it  but i wouldn't start with her actually name i think thats a bit weird

  4. wow- lol my mom was only 43 when shw became a grandma and she loooves hearing it too. she doesnt care what my daughter calls her. but she loves bein called grandma!

her 'pa pa' as she calls him is her favortie though. she loooves her pa pa.

    congrats!

  5. find grandma and grandpa in different launguages and have your parents decide which they like best. pick ones that dont give off that old person sence

  6. My cousin calls our grandma "Gee-Gee".

Tell your mom to get over it. She'll be called what she's called. Whether that be Grandma, Granny, or G-izzle, she has no say.

  7. My sis calls our Gran omething like Grandmamaaa

The wierd thing is my sister is 19

  8. Thats funny my mom said the same thing. She'll be 44 here very soon. And she told my sis and me my grandma was grandma not her. She wanted to be called something else anything. So my neice calls her nana. It was something my neice just started calling her one day. Shes almost 11 months old, so shes nana now lol. So she got something different lol.

  9. Grams and Poppy

  10. ummm...my niece calls my mom gama,we call our grandaparents, gmomma and gdaddy, but one of our grandmas likes to be called nana but i dont call her tht

  11. LOL  Your mom sounds like mine!  My mother said the same thing to me.  She refused to be called "Granny" Grandma" or basically any of the proper word for Grandmother.  So we opted for, (or shall I say she decided..lol) that my children will call her "Mama" and my dad "Papa".  It works, my kids call me Mommy, and Mom...and I've always called my Mom "Mama" so It makes it easy for me when referring to her....It's always Mama  It's also pretty easy for a baby to learn how to say "mama" and "papa". A lot quicker than grandma and grandpa that's for sure.  My mom was born and raised in the South, so out there the word "mama" is quite common, much more so, than out here in California.

  12. My MIL is the same way...she loves the fact that shes gonna be a grandma though....just hates being called it- She prefers to be called 'Nana'.

  13. Nana...my niece calls her grandma G-Ma

  14. My girls call my mom Yaya, my aunt Nana, other grandma G-ma.  and the call the guys Grandpa or papa.

  15. Since she has the aversion to grandma ask her what she WANTS to be called.  In the south you'll hear a lot of ma maw, me maw, granny, and nana.

  16. I am 13 and have 6 brothers and sisters. We call my mom's mother Nana and my dad's mother Grammy. How about you try Grandma in her nationalities language. For example my friend calls her Grandpa, Farrfar (I'm not sure how to spell it) because that is Grandpa in Swedish.

  17. You can call them nanny or nana and pappy or papa...How funny! Why does everyone else have to make your baby's birth about themselves? LOL! It makes me laugh sometimes. Good luck, and if all else fails call her grandma and let her cringe. LOL! Good luck!

  18. My kids call my mom Grana, and my Dad wanted to be called Pop Pop.

  19. My oldest started calling his Grandmothers "mam-maw" & "paw-paw". He now calls his Grandmothers & me "Mumble". I have no idea why. My Grandmother is "Grammy".

    Other names could be:

Nana (pronounced either "nan-na" or "nun-na"

    Gram

    Grammy

    Big momma

    Memaw

    G-ma (or just "G")

Your child will end up calling them whatever they can pronounce it will probably stick. Once that baby comes & starts babbling, your mother won't care what the baby calls her!!

  20. They call my husbands parents by their first names because that is what his parents prefer.  They call my mother Nana.  I know a lady who is called Oma (German I think but not sure).  They call their great grandfather Pop Pop which might work for your dad.

  21. My kids call my mom Grams or Grammy and they call my dad Poppy! My daughter actually came up with the names when she was little and they have stuck ever since.

  22. Your mother sounds pretty self-possessed. She should celebrate her grandchild and be happy that she is called anything... "Grandma" is an honor!

My kids call my parents Grandma and Pappap. My husband's parents are Grandmom and Poppy (never liked those names, but I'm not too keen on his parents, either... teehee )....

  23. My mom didn't want to be called grandma either.. but I told her i didn't care lol. I made sure they learned grandma lol.

    She doesn't mind it now..

My mother in law made my daughter call her nana lol..

My friends called their grandma "nonna" and "yaya"

for grandpa.. they called him "pipo" "papa" "pop pop" "gamps"

they will get over once it starts to happen.. they will love the fact that the baby is talking.. it melts their hearts

  24. I'm only 16 and don't have any kids of my own. My maternal grandparents were 58( grandpa) and  53 (grandma) when I was born. I called them Grandpa and Grandma. They never complained.  My little second cousin however ( first great-grandchild) is surely calling my Grandpa, Grandpa and not Great- Grandpa Felix.

  25. ♥ My daughter calls my husbands parents grandma and grandpa. She calls my parents mema and papa.

    Good luck
