  1. So I'm actually Romanian, born in the States but have been there many times. A lot of the previous answers are really dated...Romania has gone through a lot of changes, after the fall of communism in 89, the country started turning itself around, and since becoming part of the EU, it's completely different. Of course there are gypsies but you just have to have some common sense and don't encourage them, and don't look like a total baller to attract too much attention to yourself if you are that concerned about getting mugged. There are so many beautiful things to see, so much history...I would def. recommend touring Brasov, Sighisoara and all the monastaries and castles...That whole part of the country is like a hidden gem in Europe. Pretty much all the young people speak English now, and stores take credit cards....becareful how you research, you are most likely going to get a good amount of very dated old advice, even if people were there only a few years ago, it already has changed so much! good luck...

  2. all i know about romania sre the myth about vampires and warewolves although i recommend u to visit romania its always nice 2 visit other countries learn their culture and bring some stuff 2 remember the trip

  3. I lived in Romania for a while.  2 thumbs up.  The first comment is really inaccurate.  Yes there are gypsies, pollution.  I dont' know about the organized crime.

I never had a problem with gypsies.  If you note them on a train, keep your things near you and watch out for the kids... they're crafty.  Never had anything stolen though.

There is a lot of pollution in the capital, but the capital is a complete sh*thole, so I would only go there to fly in.  There are a lot of homeless there and kids on the street and most of the architecture is commy block bldgs.  Not good.

The rest of the country is AMAZING.  Much original architecture from medieval times.  A lot of farmers that do the horse and buggy thing.  The people are insanely helpful.

i lived in sighisoara  while i was there.  I went to the bar and one of the patrons heard me speaking English and insisted that I come stay with his family while I was in the country.  I ended up staying 6 months, paid all their bills (which amounted to about $50/month) and was able to travel via hitchhiking.. which is very safe there.  Just make sure to offer the driver a few bucks for gas.

Downside:  really expensive to call the US, not a lot of internet access outside the city-- or rather, there is, but it's usually full.  There's definitely a language barrrier, but the Romanians are usually patient and if you can be too, you can get what you need.

Upsides:  Cheap, lots of medieval castles, most of the produce is sold fresh in the markets and all of the things I mentioned above.

Highly recommended.  I've traveled extensively and Romania is on the top of the list.

  4. unfortunately, all the answers are either non-sense or old info...

as an expat living in bucharest for one and a half year, first of all, romania is NOT cheap... especially bucharest... totally, definetely, absolutely expensive... hotels... they are crazy... 2 star hotel asks for 120 euro per night... if you ever come to bucharest, find daily rental apartements... (www.anuntul.ro may help... they call it "regim hotilier" or something like that here... they cost about 30-40 euro per night)

but, other than bucharest, romania is beautiful... there are a lot of places to see if you like nature and history...

but as i said, don't think that it is cheap here and you can spend your holiday here for a couple of bucks... (actually it is the most expensive country i have ever been... which i have been to germany, russia, ukraine, etc...)

and about gypsies... yes, they exist... yes, they are around... but don't think that there are gypsies everywhere and they'll attack you... it is just like every other country and/or city... if you go into a dark alley, nobody knows what will happen... but if you are in a good neighbourhood, it is unlikely to have any trouble...

  5. yes i would visit because it is extremely cheap and beautiful!!! It is the home of the gypsies though, so watch yourself valuables!

  6. A lot of gypsies there and organized crime.  Also pretty polluted and messed up by Soviet occupation.  Sleazy politics.

    But otherwise okay.
