I'm looking to adopt a rat or two (probably a pair of males). I will not get them from a pet store & have managed to find a couple ratterys(about an hour away)..

*But I'm wondering, is it standard practice to not allow people to come to the rattery?

  1. Many ratteries don't want people coming in for fear of disease. Some will let people come through. I don't have a problem with either practice, as long as the ratteries that do not allow people take photos of all the areas in the rattery and fully explain their care procedures and what they breed for.

So, to be clear, yes, it is quite common for ratteries not to allow people in. Just make sure to ask lots of questions, ask to see their breeding lines, and ask for photos of the rattery. If at any time you feel like they aren't being honest or you don't like the way they operate, bail out.

  2. Well, any rattery that I've worked with has always been very willing to let customers come to the rattery.

I would be a little concerned if they weren't willing to let you see the rattery. I mean, are they trying to hide something? Maybe their rats aren't the healthiest or are in a dirty environment...you never know. But most businesses are more than happy to let people see their stores..so I think that's a little strange.

  3. You kill kittens and want vermin as a pet? Weird.

  4. Good choice on type of pet. I got my pet rat from the store and she was my best friend. We also mated her twice and she did great. If you get a rat make sure it doesn't have a cold. Do this by bringing its face close to your ear. If you hear small choo sounds then he does other wise its good. I cant tell you bout ratteries cause i have never been to one. Hope I helped.

  5. Yes, most ratteries are very peticular. Bringing somebody to the rattery could introduce certain diseases to the rats which could kill them or "ruin their breeding rats". Ask lots of questions, be thorough, and go with your gut instinct. If something seems off it probably is.

Some ratteries that don't want you to come to their place will provide pictures on their website of their housing and whatnot.

  6. Yes, they don't let you in in-case you are an under cover pest control agent
