Their customer service sucks.  I had a very bad experience with them.  I won't fly them again.

they are terrible. They lost my luggage and then the plane had mechanical problems and sat on the tarmac for 3 hours without as much as an apology from the crew.

I have not made my mind up if flying an American carrier is safer due to the increased security checks ( which are random so not really that safe) or if they are more dangerous because they are the targets of terrorists. OR fly with a less of a target airline who does not fly the American flag, but has less security checks. perplexing, yes.

Now on the other hand I can give this report. I just flew British Airways to London last week. The plane was modern, with tv screen in the seat in front of me. The food was outstanding, comparable to a decent restaraunt. The service was great/often. The alcoholic drinks were free. Movie choice was limited, but there was a choice.

On the return trip 2 days ago the British Airways flight was cancelled/delayed due to airport terminal breakdown and we were given a flight back on American Airlines by British Airways via a different terminal. I was 1/2 searched (meaning I was picked for a search/frisk but it was merely a show, the woman opened my bag but didnt even bother to take anything out before giving it back to me. The frisk was pathetic, I could have been carrying a bazooka and the frisker would not have detected it) The plane was older with a mounted center tv for everyone to watch, no choice of movie at all.  the service was also great but the alcoholic drinks were $5 each. The meal was awful, true to form airplane food.

I am not sure of the price difference as I was given the return trip by the Airline. All I know is that the BA flight was the cheapest I could find anywhere online before I booked it.

They are the biggest airline in the world and just as safe as any other. Security is a pain, but all the USA based airlines or carriers to USA are paranoid. Food isnt great and depending what plane you go on some have TV screens in the seat backs, others rely on big screens and this months movies are poor too. I fly with them all the time (just back from Florida) and they are no better or no worse than the rest
