What do you know about global warming? Facts and Opinions Alike...?

I think that the proof of the melting of the polar ice caps is evidence of a Major climate change, regardless of whats causing it... in 2006 alone there was glaciers above greenland that melted so much it DROPPED 400 feet deeper into water... from what I understand the ice is dramatically melting into the ocean, which is causing the oceans temp to actually start to drop, which in return causes planets temp to drop, now you have ice age.... and fresh water thats really cold does what when it hits salt water thats warmer??? anyone? The rate that species are dying in the world is horrific, we are drilling into the earth MASSIVE holes for oils, which in return has to be filled with something so I imagine thats not very good... we are creating pollution, causing radiation, and within this year have completed some kind of massive microscope machine to see smaller than ever, but this *machine* is actually causing major chemical reactions by hurling molecules around... but we are safe?

  1. idk about if i saw the actuall evidence ya i would be like yes its true but i think that its fabricated by the gov't  and im not trying to offend you honestly but idk hey pe@ce out guy!

  2. becaues every thing is not going to happen all at once

  3. as we can see air pollution is a major contributor for keeping our world very hot. It is very hard to stop this problem because obviously we see mobiles or vehicles in our everyday lives. Which lets out harmful gases that affect the ozone layer. But we, the people are really the ones to blame for this. Because even we do many things that affect our world. Even a simple thing like smoking can damage the world. we might not notice it. but little by little ozone layer depletes..As for global warming, we need more methane baby!!.as it promotes to greenhouse effect helps our global warming..

  4. Global warming is basically in its most simple form pollution that has created a big gas blanket (CO2 n stuff like that) around the world and is basically trapping the earths heat and the sun's heat. It is making the icecaps melt and that makes the sea water rise... eek! :S...

We aren't safe as the seas will rise up and cover any sea level land, the rivers will rise creating floods and chaos!

I think the only way to reduce global warming and letting the earth breathe is by working as a community to reduce our pollution and electrical usage

  5. an excerpt from a post by Jack H

The most recent attempt to imply there was an overwhelming scientific "consensus" in favor of man-made global warming fears came in December 2007 during the UN climate conference in Bali. A letter signed by only 215 scientists urged the UN to mandate deep cuts in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. But absent from the letter were the signatures of these alleged "thousands" of scientists. (See AP article: - LINK )

UN IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri urged the world at the December 2007 UN climate conference in Bali, Indonesia to "Please listen to the voice of science."

The science has continued to grow loud and clear in 2007. In addition to the growing number of scientists expressing skepticism, an abundance of recent peer-reviewed studies have cast considerable doubt about man-made global warming fears. A November 3, 2007 peer-reviewed study found that "solar changes significantly alter climate." (LINK) A December 2007 peer-reviewed study recalculated and halved the global average surface temperature trend between 1980 - 2002. (LINK) Another new study found the Medieval Warm Period "0.3C warmer than 20th century" (LINK)

A peer-reviewed study by a team of scientists found that "warming is naturally caused and shows no human influence." (LINK) - Another November 2007 peer-reviewed study in the journal Physical Geography found "Long-term climate change is driven by solar insolation changes." (LINK ) These recent studies were in addition to the abundance of peer-reviewed studies earlier in 2007. - See "New Peer-Reviewed Scientific Studies Chill Global Warming Fears" (LINK )

With this new report of profiling 400 skeptical scientists, the world can finally hear the voices of the "silent majority" of scientists."

    So there you have it

    sloegin says

    Sacred Mother Earth

    Is a no brainer

    Recycle humans

    Couldn't be plainer

    On this gentle Earth

    Humans are a cancer

    Get rid of them

    Is the only answer

  6. I am a junior in high school and I somewhat believe in global warming. I don't believe in the whole hoax that all gore has set. I do believe that the earth is heating up, but not just because we put toxins in the air, I believe that the Earth is actually turning on it's axis and in turn changing the position of the sun on the earth. I do think that we could protect our earth better by doing all those things that they tell us, but I don't believe it's as big as a factor as everyone says in globa warming.

  7. i know that it was 70 degrees in january in virginia and thats warming to me and it bearly snows here anymore... thats what i consider global warming

  8. There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.

For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day.  If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence.  Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day.  Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere.  If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.

We know it's warming, and we've measured how much:

    http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science...

Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth's natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they've gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming.  What they found is:

Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming.  This is during a very rapid period of global warming.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/62902...

    http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/media/pro...

    A recent study concluded:

“the range of  [Northern Hemisphere]-temperature reconstructions and natural forcing histories…constrain the natural contribution to 20th century warming to be <0.2°C [less than one-third of the total warming].  Anthropogenic forcing must account for the difference between a small natural temperature signal and the observed warming in the late 20th century.”

    http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/104...

You can see this in the third graph here, where the dotted lines are just from natural causes, and the full lines are natural + human causes:

    http://www.pnas.org/content/vol104/issue...

If that’s not enough to convince you the Sun isn’t responsible, consider the fact that no scientific study has ever attributed more than one-third of the warming over the past 30 years to the Sun, and most attribute just 0-10% to the Sun.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

So the Sun certainly isn't a large factor in the current warming.  They've also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.

"An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that 'Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.'"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovitc...

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

So it's definitely not the Earth's natural cycles.  They looked at volcanoes, and found that

    a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight

    b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/Gases/man....

So it's certainly not due to volcanoes.  Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions.  We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna...

And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels.  We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we've seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we've seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%).  You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Clima...

This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

  9. Safe, I have one, I keep money in it. How can we be safe when you have communisits on one side, 3rd world country wars on the other side, keep functioning at a peak efficiency level too, cookie?

  10. we are causing some warming (maybe insignificant). fact.

we are causing this current warming. very likely (>90%).

  11. I know that I want to help stop it from exacerbating. I also know that it will get much worser if we don't do something about it all together.

  12. oil bill it out of sight, global warming is not coming fast enough
