What do you know about guinea pigs?

I just got my son a guinea pig, and don't know too much about them, besides basic care. I was holding the guinea pig(his name is Roscoe) and he'll run up my lap towards my face. My husband seems to think Roscoe is playing. Is he? How often do they need to be out of their cages? Do they like the balls hey run around in(like a hamster)? What kind of vegetables are best to feed him?

Those hamster type run around balls aren't suitable for guinea pigs, they can damage their backs and legs in them.  Best just letting Roscoe run around the house or an enclosure outside for a wee while every day (an hour or so)

They need their nails cut fairly regularly, but you have to be careful cos there's a vein runs up the middle of each nail, would be ouch if you cut through it!  Personally I prefer the vet to cut all my pets nails, just so I know they're done right!

Apples and carrots are usually a favourite when it comes to fruit n veg!

As for him running up towards your face, he's probably just being friendly and a bit nosy!

Had long hair guinea pigs. They didn't like to be handled so it may have been trying to escape, but need to add only handled them when it was bath time. Some literature says daily cleaning, but realistic says daily cleaning of p**p and complete clearing of cage weekly. Lettuce and carrots. They love dandelion leaves. They do not have gallbladders, and if memory is correct think only precaution is on over feeding them. They need salt block in cage. They need regular nail clipping. There is product advertised  on tv that I wish I had if it will work on small nails that trims nails without cutting them. Cutting them without hurting them is tough.

he helps you on his math homework. they are leprechauns.   Roscoe's are tacos. they prefer rock and roll. when you turn the lights off and leave the room they do the roller disco. they hate you. on Saturdays they play wii tennis.   they often prefer chocolate covered erasers. ask no questions. have no doubt. they play bass guitar. they love flashbulbs. shut up. and grand theft auto 3. and most of all this is important do not forget!! THEY WILL WATCH DORA ON MONDAY MORNINGS IN THE EVENING!!!

your Guinea pig is playing. they need lots of exercise, try and let him run around at least once a day. They won't run in balls like hamsters and gerbils do. I tried with mine, and he just sat there. feed him apples, romaine lettuce, strawberries, carrots, and grapes.

yes they do love crawling near your face, its a sign of affection, you are now their guardian.

They need to be let out of their cage for floor time once a day for about and hour total.

they like carrots romaine lettuce, apples, bannanas NO POTATOES.

MAKE SURE THEY GET VITAMIN C BECAUSE THEY CANT PRODUCE IT ON THEIR OWN UNLIKE OTHER RODENTS, THEY CAN GET SCURVY.

they love to play (and yes he was) and they don't like those little balls. and even if they do, it's actually not good for their back since they don't bend like hamsters. romain lettuce, baby carrots, cucumber slices, apples slices, and green bell peppers are favorite treats for my piggies. i let mine out for at least a half hour everyday and i watch and interact with them for bonding. guinealynx is the best site for info in my opinion. good luck. oh and yes about the nails. just not too short or you will make him bleed.
