  1. Quite a lot... (I've lived and worked in both countries) if you were a bit more specific as to what you want to know, I'd be happy to oblige but the basics are:

Ethiopia is Christian. It is surrounded by Muslim countries (well, Kenya and Uganda are nominally Christian and Eritrea is half Christian but the populations bordering Ethiopia are largely muslim). This makes them insecure.

Ethiopia and Somalia also have historical differences - Somalis feel that Eastern Ethiopia ('Ogaden' or 'Somalia Region V' (five) depending on who you talk to) should be part of Somalia. Certainly it is a predominantly Islamic region.

It can be argued that Eritrea should be part of Ethiopia (it once was). Eritrea and Ethiopia are locked in conflict with deep antagonism to each other that often flares up into outright war. Eritrea has supported Islamic groups in Somalia, is a base for many such groups (e.g. Islamic Courts - UIC - aka Shebaab) and vice versa - this gives additional fuel for Ethiopia to dislike Somalia.

Ethiopia is land-locked; access to the sea is through Somalia or Eritrea.

Fighting along the border and/or between Somalia and Ethiopia has been ongoing since 1960 with the most recent event being the invasion by Ethiopian troops in 2006 against the UIC. This invasion was, and is, supported by the USA in a (knee-jerk?) analysis that any Christian government must be better than an Islamic one (which, by definition has to be 'supporting terrorists').

This ignores the human rights violations and other drawbacks of the militaristic Ethiopian government and also ignores the fact Somalia under the UIC was, for the first time in decades, at peace and had a resemblance of law and order... it didn't last long!

Enough for now? Don't hesitate to expand your question if you want more info...

    P.S. It's Ethiopian and Somalian or Ethiopia-Somalia but that's a minor point...

  2. Eritrea split off from Ethiopia to give Muslims full control of both sides of the Red Sea
