Footy isn't shown on major US TV, so it's not like we're internationally zenophobic on knowing much about your sport, mate.  We just don't have the exposure you do.

Wasn't your football originally played by cricketeers, to keep them in shape?  I mean, your field resembles some features from cricket, like the goal posts on each end and the shape of the field.  Your game appears to share many rules that one would find with, what we call here soccer, or futboll.  

You don't wear pads or helmets like we do.  You don't have interceptions run for TDs like we have, but you do have something a little like it with the mark, which entitles you to a free kick after you catch the ball  in your hands from a kick.
