  1. Well, I personally know quite a few people who went to state schools and they have a lot of good things to say about them.

But I know from work experience and exp. with prof.'s at a Univ that they all talk major sh*t about people who come from State colleges.  Is it warranted?  Who knows.

This is just the way it is.

  2. State schools ARE universities.

Do you mean State schools and PRIVATE Universities?

The rivalries tend to be more intense when both schools are highly regarded and close in location.  Thus, the rivalry between Duke and UNC or Berkeley and Stanford are among the most intense.  Similarly, UCLA and USC have a big rivalry.

These rules don't always work.  For example, there doesn't seem to be much of a rivalry between Princeton and Rutgers, though they are only 15 miles apart.  There doesn't seem to be much of a rivalry between Emory and Ga Tech, though they are in the same city.  And there doesn't seem to be any kind of rivalry between Maryland and Johns Hopkins or the Naval Academy, despite their close proximity.
