Whoa.... there are a number of different styles of regional music in Mexico, one of which is called "norteno"!  (Some others are banda and cumbia.  I've put some links that will help you learn more below, as well as specific links for los Tigres del Norte.  They are a very popular group, especially in the northern part of Mexico where I live (Torreon, Coahuila).

Well yes in the north of the country they are the kings, but in the south really they are not as popular as in the north and definitely they are not the Beatles of Mexico, that is too much.

Regional Music is very different according to the part of the country, in General we love Mariachi Music that is the National Icon. José Alfredo Jiménez its best composer and definitely who understood very good the essence of this kind of Music.

But for example in Veracruz they love more Caribbean rhythms come from Cuba, as Danzón, the music from Veracruz  uses the harp and marimba.

The music of the north of my state is played with violins, indigenous people loved the sound of this instrument and adequate it to their music.

As I was telling you Los tigresdel norte are the kings of the North cos, they love a music that has influence from Polka, and it had has its evolution, nowadays what is really popular even in the south is Pasito Duranguense an style of this band music, so at the present what use to be considered for low class people is now the hot music of the parties with groups like Kpaz de la Sierra and Trono de México, for all social classes, pretty amazing, the group who begun to play for all social classes and made that rockers and pop people listen this music was Intocable, no doubt about that.

In my opinion I love Mariachi music, Los Tigres only La Puerta Negra single.
