  1. they were actually pathetic and overly rated.  just all overly hyped by the 300 movie.  the mongolians conquer more than anyone.  they slaughtered a bunch of people

  2. There are dozens of books about Ancient Sparta.

If your local library doesn't have any ancient history books ask them if they can get books in by inter-library loans from bigger libraries or go to the nearest college or university library?

  3. I know they had big swords, they cut enemies heads and they wondered why in august 2008 an idiot would question who they were.

  4. At the time, Spartan women were much better off than women in Athens and in other parts of the world. They could own property and business without having to be widowed or married. They could appear completely naked in public too, and this was seen as something natural, not a cause for shame!

  5. When I was in the 6th grade, I learned the boys were sent to Spartan "WarCamp"at an extremely young age; they were taught the skills of a warrior...

  6. They were bad mofos.

  7. That they were a society without any art or decoration. They believed in being harsh and warriors and that was about it. They even took babies away from their mothers, lest they be pampered and become soft. The adjective Spartan still means bare and rough today. This is very general knowledge that I got from college textbooks.

  8. They were a very militant city-state.  Every male that was not a slave was forced to join the military.  In fact, some new born babies were left on the side of a hill to die if they were not deemed desirable or healthy.  The government was run by a group of five elder men.  They were involved in the military in their youth.  They used metal rods as currency for a while.  Sparta was constantly feuding with Athens over dominance of Greece.  They held rule a few times.  While it had many slaves, and the only people considered "citizens" were free male landowners, Sparta treated its women fairly well compared to other city-states.  Women were even allowed to attend certain public events, which usually were sports of some type.  So, to sum it up:  THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!
