What I enjoy most about the dynamic on Friends, is the idea of friends as family.  

When we grow older, we still need our parents, but there is a part of us that doesn't want them to see us as needy any longer.  We want our parent to think that we are still self-sufficient

What the Friends do for each other, is to provide a family-like support in those times when you really need someone to lean on that is more like family.
