What do you like most about teaching BALLET?

I'm a senior this year and I want to study to become a preschool teacher. But I would also like to study to become a part-time ballet teacher as well.

Currently I do some assistant ballet teaching. But can anyone tell me what its like being an actual ballet teacher? Things you like? Things you dislike? Difficulties? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Good questions....

    What I like:

    - seeing the looks on my students faces when they finally "get it"

    - seeing my students perform a routine on stage that I choreographed.

    - all the questions they ask, and some outlandish ones too!

    - how they depend on me & look up to me

    - backstage during a performance (putting on stage makeup, costumes, lining up in a straight line, etc).

    - knowing that my students are learning from me, and the hope that they'll remember me like I remember my first dance instructors.

    - when they shanee' or pirouette (arms in first) with their fingers touching - so cute!!

    - when they pull me to the side and say "look what I can do"

    There are no dislikes.

    Difficulties:

    - when a student doesn't have enough money, or has some family issue that prevents them from coming to class (that's the worst).

    - when a student injures themselves - the worry

    - when parents of students cause issues (gossip, argumentative) etc.

    - when a child isn't interested in dance & has other interests, but the parents push them & push them almost to a breaking point.

I love teaching dance.  I love my students.  I'd never give it up, no matter how long the difficulties list might get.....I was meant to teach dance and I feel the need to give back what was given to me.  Good luck with your future endeavors in dance instruction....Hope this helps!
