What do you look for when choosing a putter?

I've upgraded my golf clubs with the exception of the putter. I'm not sure what to look for. There is just so many choices out there. Anyone have suggestions on what you should look for when buying a putter? Is it just whichever feels the best to you when you hit it or what?

There are as many   theories on putting and choosing a putter as there are those who wish to give advice, For those who remember Billy Casper, he used an old hickory shafted putter with a moderately heavy head, had a grooved stroke and was one of the better putters of his day, He contended that the feel and comfort of the club during the stroke were most important. They  were then and are true to this date.. Find a club that feels comfortable, that is well balanced, where you can feel there is a head at the bottom of  the shaft. That one should do well for you.

I prefer a long face ... the longer face width is more obvious when aligning or "aiming" the putter to the direction you intend to start the putt.  

My second criteria is back weighting ... which makes a smooth stroke that continues through the ball easier.  

"Yip's" are usually the result of a jerky motion during putting.  Something we all try to avoid all the time!!  

Putters are the only club that are not "regulated" ... thus, you have almost unlimited styles to pick from.

this probably isnt to helpful but just test a bunch of putters and see what you feel most comfortable with.

You look first for the right length

then you look for the right style b/c you want it to look good when you look down at it. then you want a putter your length and style with the right feel and weight
