  8. You can cook practically anything in a slow cooker, but would not recommend doing fish in there.

    A brief description:

Turn slow cooker on high to warm up - approx 20 mins.

Chop the vegetables and either saute them or chuck them in raw.  Contrary to the natural laws of science where they say heat rises and you would put the vegetables to be cooked longer at the top, in this case you would put the harder vegetables at the bottom - ie onion and celery below say mushrooms and tomatoes which are softer.

Brown any meat or chicken etc having seasoned.  Put in herbs if using and then just a small amount of liquid - say half what you would normally put in.  Slow cookers create their own steam and you do not really want everything swimming in liquid but you do need something to prevent burning.

When you are ready to go out turn the setting to Lo and forget about it.  It will be fine.

On return and you are not ready to eat but do not wish to cook further just turn to Lo or Warm and that will keep the food at an acceptable temperature but will no longer cook.

Add thickener or pulses approx half an hour before you want to serve with cooker on high.

I love my slow cooker - I have two, one for larger portions and a smaller one to make my breakfast in the night before!  Mmm.  I am often too tired to cook because of health problems but I can chop and fry and then bung it in the cooker and I can forget about it.

  9. pot roast is the easiest! take pot roast you can use beef or pork. through it in with some stock add in some peeled potato's (or red skins if you dont feel like peeling) a chopped onion, some carrots, chopped celery.... garlic cloves...

turn the slow cooker on and leave it ALL day! like at least 6 hours when you open it up it will be the best tasting tender meat in the world! poor some of the broth out and you can add a little cornstarch to it in a sauce pan whisk all the lumps out and bring it to a boil. turn the heat off let it sit  minute and walla you have gravy too

  10. I think slow cookers are the best invention since sliced bread!

Easiest one to start with is spaghetti bolognese. Just buy a Dolmio mix from the supermarket or its own brand and empty the contents into the slow cooker.

Fry off half a pound of mincemeat until it is brown, strain off the liquid and empty into the sauce. You can add sliced carrots, mushrooms or whatever you want. Then give it a good stir.

Turn the slow cooker on and if you want a meal within two hours turn it up high or if you aren't on a rush leave it on low.

It's wonderful in the winter when you turn it on before going to work and get home to the lovely aroma.

P.S. An added bonus is that it will actually warm up the room too!

    Have fun!
