  1. It's from Descartes "Cogito ergo sum." The only person you know exists is you, because you think. How do you know that a person you can't hear and can't see still exists, for all you know all existence is in you're field of vision and hearing, maybe when you turn around it all disappears. I know it's jumbled and confused, just trying to demonstrate my thought process on the subject.

  2. I think it means that whoever can think for themselves exists and is alive.

  3. Research the philosopher "Rene Descartes" and his quote, "I think therefore I am."

Here are some cartoons making fun of the idea Descartes had:

  4. In Philosophy they question whether or not the world and us humans actually exist. What proof is there that this whole consciousness isn't just all in your head and that nothing is real. How can you show that you exist when it could all just be someone's imagination. Descartes said that he could prove it just by thinking. If you can think, then you must exist.

  5. the awareness of thought proves your existence.

  7. Aren't you supposed to *think* about this yourself?

In a nutshell, "Cogito, ergo sum" (which actually means "I think therefore I am") is meant to say that only beings that exist and are self-aware are the ones who think. i.e. you use your brain to think, so you exist as a person. But flowers don't think, therefore they just exist and don't have a persona as such. That's how I was taught to interpret it anyway. Look it up on Wikipedia, this is a Rene Descartes quote.

  8. "i think, therefore i exist" or "i think therefore i am" was said by descartes. it basically means that, although your senses can be decieved, the fact that you can think and realise that you are thinking, proves that you, yourself, exist, even though you cannot actually prove to yourself that anything else around you does.
