  1. It depends. If you're taking a lifeguard course at a beach (especially a major, big one), then I've read that a running test is included. But in traditional lifeguarding classes, you have to swim 500m (550 yards), surface dive and retrieve items (3 dive rings, 10 pound weight) from underwater and swim back to a certain point, and you also have to "save" someone.

  2. Confidence, A desire to be of service, a dedication to the commitment you are undertaking, Ability to really hoof it, to get to where you need to be. An ability to row a row boat accurately and efficiently, and strong endurance --swimming skills--you must be able, I believe to swim a mile, and to run a mile in 7 minutes. First aid skills, which you learn in the process becoming First Aid Certified, and also acquire in the process, you r life saving certificate, which will require you to  rescue a swimmer, and swim them to safety.

    Best wishes in your effort.
