Question:

What do you need to complete a sub woofer setup?

Instead of purchasing my sub woofer and amp from a store, I was going to buy everything online and just have it installed because it seems to be quite a bit cheaper and I can get the brands I want and not have to pick from what they offer.

I was thinking of going with a JL Audio 12W3v2-2 but there are other versions of it too with only one number different in the model so I'm not really sure what the difference between them are.

I know that I'd have to get them put into a box and I've heard that a vented box is kind of the 'new thing' and has replaced bandpass from a few years ago.

There are a few different types of amps I know of (mono, 2-ch, 4-ch) and if I was to just get one 12" sub, would I only need a mono amp? Or 2 channel? (One in, one out?)

And probably wiring too. Any particular brand that is better than others?

  1. JL is the way to go the difference is 1 sub is single voice coil and the other is dual voice coil go with the dual more stronger you may want to call jl audio and get there opinion on ported or sealed box ok let them know the subs your getting  go with the 2channel amp and go with the rockford fosgate wiring kit

i have 2 jl 12w1v2 had them in a jl sealed box and was rocking all the bass beats then put them in a ported box and does hit harder but does not hit every bass line like a sealed box but the box really isnt designed for those subs might be a lil big but i would call jl audio on what box to get ok good luck

  2. Most likely you want a mono amp.  2 channel or greater amps, are more for Stereo sound....1 channel for left and 1 for right.  The 4 channels are 1 for right front 1 for right rear 1 for left front and left rear etc.

You can get a stereo or 2 channel amp and bridge the two channels together...But best to put the money in a decent mono amp instead especially if you are running one woofer.

JL Audio is a decent brand, but usually is on the high end of the spectrum for price.  Also the W3v2's are their mid level SQ sub.  If you want check out Fi Car audio Fi Q subwoof, which would be similar as well as the ImageDynamix Q series woofers as well.

Oh and a Vented box is the same thing as a ported box...nothing new there.  Just depends on what you want.  A sealed box is smaller and better for Sound quality.
