No, you don't need a license.  Most bartenders start out with no experience and work their way up to bigger bars.  You can go to school, but chances of beign hired at a really busy bar to begin with is still slim...

Some states require a certificate, or license depending on where you live.  However knowledge of drinks, best place to start would be get a job at a pub/ restaurant, a bar that serves food that has tables, while your making tips waitressing your learning the drinks. Then opt to bartend if you have been a good employee.  The good thing about bartending is there is always an opening for one.
