What identification do you need for a mother to take two children (12 and 16) over the Canadian border on land and from the U.S. of corse?

  1. As of January 31, 2008, a verbal declaration isn't good enough anymore.  Anyone over 18 must have either (a) a passport, or (b) a picture ID and a birth certificate issued by the Federal Government, the State, or the county where you were born.  Those under 18 must have either (a) a passport, or (b) a birth certificate issued by the Federal Government, the State, or the county where they were born.  

    Also, if you are a single parent and do not have sole custody of your children, you will need a signed and notarized statement from the father granting you permission to take the children out of the country.
