I've heard you can hook up equipment and find a blank station and host a radio show. Is that true? If so, can you just give me ALL the details about it?

  1. You can, but your parents wouldn't appreciate the police coming to visit. All stations must be licensed in one way or another, and if you have to ask how, you probably don't have the skills yet to build one.

The licensing is necessary to keep the airways controlled and chaos-free. There are a finite number of "channels" (for this discussion). The radio isn't just for entertainment, it's used in national, regional and local emergencies, too. Unlicensed operators jam up the frequencies of the legitimate operators.

This answer has been dumbed-down a little (no offense, that's just an expression) so that you'd understand it. Heck, I've been doing this stuff for 40 years and still don't get the technical stuff. There are VLP (very low power) stations that are relatively easy to get licensed, but you've got to have the technical know how.

Maybe there's a radio club at the school or college you attend. And maybe one of our more technically inclined members will chime in on this question with a better answer for you.
