  1. Before entering vet school, or before starting undergraduate courses as a prevet student?

Go to Cornell's  vet school's website - they have a lot of info as to what high school students ought to take if they are interested in attending vet school and/or applying for prevet.   You don't go into all of this already knowing about veterinary medicine; you are going to learn about it!  Biology, chemistry and anatomy are good choices.  Basically, take all the high school math and science courses you can.

You don't have to register as prevet if you want to go to vet school eventually - technically any major can apply to vet school provided they have taken the right prerequisite courses.  Biology is a good choice, and gives you more wiggle room for another career choice in case vet school doesn't work out.  Vet school is selective, but even more so that that, it is hard to get into because there are so few vet schools compared to the number of applicants.  Your best chance is to apply to a vet school in your state.

  2. Actually you don't need to know any of these things - that's what they teach you in your training.

To get into vet school primarily you need top science A level grades - the competition for places is so great that only the best grades will enable you to get in.

Secondly, a bit of commitment to animals other than your own is always helpful. Volunteer for an animal charity.

In reality there are so many animal lovers especially 'horsey types' applying for vet school they are looking for people who will be able to cope with a high workload across a range of sciences (you don't do anything clinical to start with) and who have put themselves out a bit before applying. That's it.

If you get an interview, you may be asked about your personal experiences, but also more general things about your attitude to fox hunting, abbattoirs, bovine TB and badger culling and this sort of thing. You need to show an interest in the issues that practising vets have to deal with, not an in-depth knowledge of the care on any one animal.

  3. well if you want to go into vet school, you should already know your basic diseases and sicknesses (colic, rainrot, thrush, founder, laminitis, etc.) plus know the basic bone structures and muscle groups. you should probably know a little about each kind of riding, and what kind of food each horse should be on ( performance horses, pleasure, ponies, foals, miniatures, seniors, etc.) they will teach you a lot there so i wouldnt be too worried

    good luck!

  4. You should check with the school you'd like to go to & see what they tell you. Some schools are different than others. Better to know for sure.

  5. you have to go to college first and take some courses... some schools actually have pre-vet...
