  1. Standard is now 18% for average to good service.  If the service was above average 20% more if it is exceptional to make your eivening memorable(in a good way).  Keep in mind that sometimes service is sub par through not fault of the server ie understaffed or issues in the kitchen.  It is unfair and ignorant to stiff a server for something that is not his/her fault.

  2. Good Service 15-20%

    Excellent service 20-25%

I've been to many restaurants with excellent service where the server doesn't bother you but knows just when you need something & their timing throughout the meal is right on & is able to suggest & provide a great dining experience.

  3. My standard tip is $10.

    Crappy service gets a buck.

  4. Nothing more than 5 dollars because i'm cheap like that lol.

  5. I'm a server so I tip 20-25% UNLESS the server was terrible. If it is really busy, and it takes a minute or two to get her attention, I understand because in that business, people call off everyday, or quit without notice, or don't show up, and that's not the server's fault. It's tough when you get 4 or 5 tables all at one time, or you have a total of 12 to look after because some jerk didn't want to come to work. Try to be understanding please.

  6. my average tip is 20%.  Good to great service @ 25%.  Bad service I will give about 10%.  I know that servers make their money in tips, so knowing this when a server is really doing a great job, i want to reward them.

  7. I never tip more than 17%. If the service was really bad, then maybe I'll go to 15%. Why? I dunno... I don't like tipping in the first place. I know these people depend on the money, but it always feels like I'm just giving my money away. A full 20% is out, no matter how good the service was.

  8. I'm a server, so I tend to tip higher then the general dining public, but that is because I know how hard the job can be at times.  Usually we are understaffed because it's hard to keep help in this business.  Not many people want to live on 7 bucks an hour to cook or buss.  Not to mention the people who think it's ok not to tip or not tip decently because they don't want to "throw their money away".

I make $2.83 an hour plus tips.  That 2.83 an hour is gone after taxes and health insurance prems.  I depend on tips for my only real income.

I usually get anywhere from 10% to 25% depending on the customers.  Some of the older generations still think that only 10% is appropriate, but I believe it's now 15 to 20%.  I would say it should be based mostly on service.  Bad food isn't usually the servers fault, but no one ever sees the cooks, so it's easy to blame your server.

  9. if service is really good and you don't have to keep asking for refills on the drink and they are polite- then you tip 15%.  If the waitor/waitress is terrible and you hardly ever see them, you give them a penny that way they know you didn't like their service and you didn't forget to tip.

  10. Due to the fact I was in the business over 26 years AND I KNOW how hard the servers work AND how little they get paid:

I generally start at about 20%.

On a few occasions I tipped as much as 50% of the check.

On a couple occasions because someone picked up the check, I tipped the entire amount of the check!

AND yes, on 2 occasions I didn't tip one cent, BUT I let the server know why I didn't tip!

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed taking the time to answer it!

    VTY,

    Ron Berue

Yes that is my real last name!

  11. For me it depends on the service.

  12. The people rarely make even minimum wage for their guarantee. The government takes a standard amount from them based on what is billed in pads. The restaurant sometimes makes them share what tips they do get with the cooks, bus people etc.

We would have no one to wait on us if we did not tip.

  13. usually 15-18% unless really really bad service, then maybe 12%
